Anxiety Treatment

Anxiety Can Be A Constant, Unwanted Companion

Is persistent stress giving you panic attacks or making you depressed? Do you feel tense, shaky, sweaty, or out of breath in response to everyday stressors? Perhaps you have recurring stomach aches, headaches, and back pains that make relaxing difficult.

If you have difficulty managing anxiety attacks—which often strike without warning—you might shop late at night to avoid crowds. You might struggle to interact with coworkers or take on new career challenges. In your personal life, you might be so overwhelmed by anxiety or fear that you pass up social gatherings.

At night, you may have painful memories or fear recurring nightmares, which keeps you lying awake for hours. Maybe you’ve tried sleep medications which have only made your nightmares worse. Unable to manage your panic attacks, you may be cycling between the couch and the bed each day without ever feeling rested.

While this cycle of fatigue and isolation may seem endless, it doesn’t have to be. When you learn how to prevent panic attacks by finding and healing the source of your stress, you can transform your anxiety from a constant companion to an infrequent visitor (or possibly banish it altogether).

Anxiety Doesn’t Discriminate

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety affects 40 million adults every year. It can affect you regardless of your age, socioeconomic status, or any other demographic. We’ve seen clients ranging from young children needing frequent visits for severe trauma to seniors needing occasional help managing anxiety attacks.

Anxiety can be caused by a variety of stressors, from the extreme to the seemingly benign. Some of our clients are victims of sexual abuse or service members recovering from their time in the sandbox. Some have repressed anger from past loss. Others are hanging onto the stress of childhood ordeals, such as getting lost in a store or arriving at the bus stop to find that Mom or Dad are not there.

No matter what underlies or triggers your anxiety, we can help you move past it. Anxiety doesn’t knock on the door and say, “Is this a good time?” But with the help of a caring therapist specializing in anxiety it will knock less often, and when it does, you’ll be ready.

How Stress Therapy Works

Many past memories are associated with “negative” emotions, such as fear and anger. When these stored emotions are triggered repeatedly, you can end up anxious and depressed. But therapy for anxiety can help you uncover the source(s) of your anxiety and gain control over your feelings.

We offer a relaxed, compassionate environment that is free of judgment. We won’t label you, tell you what to think, or tell you how to feel. We’ll let you drive the healing process, empowering you to get out of your own way as you tap into the brain’s remarkable ability to heal itself.

When you participate in our specialized therapy for anxiety, we will introduce you to real joy. Growing strength and confidence will replace pain and fear. Your energy levels will increase and your symptoms will lesson, improving your physical performance. As your sleep quality improves and you gain greater peace of mind, your mental performance will improve.

For some, just talking through underlying issues is all that’s needed to start healing. Some clients just need a good listener to vent to or someone to validate a potential solution they already have in mind. For others, repeatedly recounting traumatic past events doesn’t help—in some cases it makes things worse.

That’s why we customize our approach for each client. We also offer a revolutionary technique called Brainspotting to heal deeply entrenched emotions that talk therapy alone often can’t address. This technique can be performed in conjunction with talk therapy to offer more comprehensive benefits. Or, if you’d rather not recount memories that upset you, this treatment can be performed talk-free.

We can help you be more productive and better equipped to grow your professional and personal relationships. Freed of any social phobias you may be struggling with, you’ll be empowered to meet a friend for lunch or ask for that first date. Therapy can help you live a calmer and happier life unburdened by anxiety.

You May Be Wondering…

Does therapy for anxiety really work?

Simply having access to an empathetic and compassionate listener has helped millions of people reduce and manage their stress. For you, though, talking repeatedly about your underlying issues may be too painful. It may even be that you’ve tried traditional talk therapy before without success.

That’s why we’ve incorporated Brainspotting into our practice. It accommodates the preferences of a wide variety of clients, and it can help you even if other types of therapy haven’t. We’ve seen many patients greatly reduce or even eliminate their anxiety, in some cases in as little as four or five sessions.

The science bears out the effectiveness of this method. In 2016, The Newtown-Sandy Hook Foundation asked trauma sufferers what types of therapy they had tried and how effective they were. Over a dozen different kinds of therapeutic intervention, including equine therapy, EMDR, and talk therapy were evaluated. By a wide margin, Brainspotting was the most effective treatment.

Won’t people think I’m crazy if I go to therapy?

You might think that seeking out therapy for anxiety means you’re abnormal or even less of a person. But mental illness is so common today that—depending on how you define it—it could actually be considered normal. It may seem that everyone else has their lives together, but therapists know the truth. Many men, women, and children have the exact same fears and feelings you do, but they suffer in silence. This creates the illusion that anxiety and depression are uncommon.

Comparing yourself to people who seem “normal” isn’t just a false comparison; it’s a losing proposition. Worrying about your image won’t help you improve your situation. What will help is gaining a new perspective and learning how to respond to anxiety in healthy ways.

I’m not sure I deserve to feel better.

Anxiety has a way of wearing down a person’s self-esteem. When friends and family say “Why are you so upset?” or “But you have a great life!” or “Quit complaining!” you might start to believe the underlying problem is you. You might even think that you deserve to be angry, unhappy, and miserable.

Despite negative self-talk or the things that unsupportive loved ones might tell you, you deserve to be happy. Your therapist will use motivational interviewing to help you question limiting beliefs. In many cases, you’ll realize these beliefs are 100% untrue. You’ll stop buying the lies others tell you – and the lies you tell yourself – and discover how worthy you truly are of living a life of joy.
